I fail to see where proposing an increase to the HOPE GPA requirement does any benefit. Isn't HOPE funded by the Georgia Lottery through the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC)?
You are correct about the source of funding for HOPE.
We suggested the increase to the HOPE GPA requirement because if tuition is increased, as we suggest, this would put a larger burden on HOPE. We did not put an exact GPA requirement in for a few reasons, some of which are:
- We do not pretend to understand all the consequences of such a change and therefore want to discuss possible changes.
- We want to show the legislature that we are willing to discuss the issue and work with them. We understand the dire economic circumstances and that these circumstances require some special action - some of which we have already suggested in this resolution. Furthermore, we are optimistic that we can work through this issue with thoughtful discussion.
I completely disagree with raising the HOPE minimum GPA. As a student who currently is paying my tuition through HOPE I believe that 3.0 minimum GPA is the perfect height. I would think that increasing the minimum GPA would cause many students, who work hard to gain the grades because they can't afford tuition, to lose scholarships and eventually miss out on a quality education. My proposal would to get rid of many of these pointless staff and faculty who sit around most of the day and cruise the internet. We don't need three people doing one persons job. Also I would have to say that the university spend a ridiculous amount of on random junk that is barely or never used. I have seen first hand both of these waists of money and I believe this is were the school should begin cuts. Punishing hard working students for Executive budgeting failure is just not right.
